Worldwide Grief Follows Death of Taize Founder Tributes and condolences have poured in to the French monastic community of Taize following the murder on August 16 of its founder, Brother Roger Schutz. Brother Roger, a Swiss Protestant theologian, was stabbed to death while conducting an evening prayer service with about 2500 young people at the community's Church of Reconciliation. He was 90.The Taize CommunityThe village of Taize, in the south of Burgundy, is the home of this international, ecumenical community, founded in the midst of World War II in 1940. Brother Roger's vision was for a community dedicated to bringing peace, reconciliation and kindness among Christians, with a particular emphasis on the needs of the suffering and the poor.The brothers are committed for their whole life to material and spiritual sharing, to celibacy, and to a great simplicity of life.
