A Question of Ethics What Happened to the Code of Ethics? by Sonya M. Hope, CPCU, member, CPCU Society Ethics Committee Senior Consultant, Albert Risk Management Consultants "Poor Martha" is a chorus echoed by many. It is ironic that Martha Stewart is sent to the big house (albeit not the same kind of "big house" the domestic diva is accustomed to) while Enron executives roam free. After all, Marthas questionable practices amounted to whether or not she told the truth about insider trading that resulted in a modest personal windfall, while Enron executives bilked thousands of people out of millions of dollars, rocked the markets, and stripped the retirement plans of innocent, hard-working people. Then there are Global Broker employees Peter Producer and Molly Marketer. Peter and Molly were recently in Chicago on client business. They shared a cab ride back to the hotel after a full day of business and client entertainment. Their expense reports, however, show that each took a separate cab back. Global Broker reimbursed each one $15 for transportation. "Its really just a small amount," some may say. "Its a big companythey can afford it." Molly is no Martha. Peter is no Ken Lay. They are just average people being guided by a relative sense of ethics. Bottom line is that Martha, Enron executives, and Peter and Molly were all unethical. Strangely enough, because Peters and Mollys conduct pales by comparison to the fraudulent fiasco of Enron, it somehow seems "not so bad." Some Companies Dont Support Their Own Code of Ethics Enron had a written ethics policy in placea voluminous one at that.
