frontline: making babies: interviews: interview: nigel cameron, ph.d.
There are thousands of babies that have been born through assistance of reproduction technology. Yet, you have serious objections to this technology. Well, part of the problem is that here we're using new means to make babies. Certainly, it's a wonderful thing for people to have babies they couldn't have otherwise. The problem is: Are these to means that at the end of the day [we] will want to use to make babies? Are they the kinds of means which are appropriate to baby human beings? This is the ultimate challenge to us in controlling technology, constraining technology to serve human dignity rather than to undermine it. And that's a discussion we've hardly begun to have. What are the means that you think about in particular? Well, of course, a striking one is that which has yet to be used to make a baby, which is cloning. The advent of cloning as a possibility for making human beings is putting into fresh focus these other technologies which cluster around the uterus fertilization.
