Caux Round Table
Lech Walesa was president of the Republic of Poland from 1990 to 1995. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in October 1983 as a result of his efforts to organize and lead the free non-communist trade union Solidarity between 1980 and 1990. In 1981, the Jaruzelski regime came into power, suspending Solidarity when it imposed martial law for fears of Soviet invasion. Walesa remained active with Solidarity underground, despite being under surveillance. In 1982, the Jaruzelski regime was forced to negotiate with Walesa and other Solidarity members.
